MMA 2022 Physician Forum - Sodium-glucose co-transport 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors
February 9, 2022

Sodium-glucose co-transport 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, also known as gliflozins, lower blood glucose by increasing glucose excretion in the urine. These drugs lower HbA1c and are part of the pharmacologic approach to managing type 2 diabetes mellitus. But these drugs do more than that. SGLT2 inhibitors improve cardiovascular outcomes and slow the progression of both diabetic and non-diabetic kidney disease. This forum will review the pharmacology of SGLT2 inhibitors and then discuss the role these drugs play in the management of type 2 diabetes. The evidence for improving cardiorenal outcomes will be presented and recommendations made for the use of these drugs in patients with cardiovascular or renal diseases. The session will conclude with a question and answer panel discussion.
